Bearish short-term natural gas market fundamentals have driven natural gas prices to much lower levels. But in reality the North American gas market remains mired in supply tightness. How long will prices remain at low levels? CERA reviews the prospects for winter prices and for the market beyond the winter. Interfuel Competition. In recent years, much focus has been on the competition between gas and residual fuel oil for electric generation markets. With falling prices, however, focus has shifted to the coal floor. CERA reexamines the implications of interfuel competition for the gas market. Supply Prospects. North American gas-directed drilling activity has been high and growing throughout the year. liquefied natural gas imports are continuing to grow. CERA examines the prospects for continued high levels of supply activity, both domestically and internationally. Regional Update. A continental divide, though narrowed, continues to separate market conditions in the West from those in the East.
